Hardcover, royal blue cloth cover, the graphic on the front cover and the text on the spine in silver-coloured ink, its original paper dust cover replaced with a clear plastic one, entitled "Swords of the British Army - The Regulation Patterns, 1788-1914", by Brian Robson, copyrighted by the author and Lionel Leventhal Limited in 1975, this First Edition published by Arms and Armour Press of London in 1975, lithographed by Duotech Graphics Limited, printed in Great Britain by William Clowes & Sons Limited of Beccles, SBN 85368 259 3. As stated in the Introduction, "The purpose of this book is to identify and describe all the regulation patterns of sword that have been used in the British Army since 1788." The book features in-depth descriptions, including historical notes, complemented by 185 black and white photographs of various swords, along with line drawings of Royal Cyphers, Royal Arms, and sword and scabbard features. It begins with a Preface by the author dated at Hove in 1975, followed by a Table of Contents and an Introduction. The book is divided into thirteen chapters: 1 - The Eighteenth Century Background; 2 - British Cavalry Swords, 1788-1878; 3 - Cavalry Troopers' Swords, 1878 to the present day; 4 - Cavalry Officers' Swords; 5 - Household Cavalry Officers' Swords; 6 - Household Cavalry Troopers' Swords; 7 - Infantry Officers' Swords; 8 - Scottish Infantry Swords; 9 - General and Staff Officers' Swords; 10 - Infantry Sergeants' Swords; 11 - Corps and Departmental Swords; 12 - Drummers', Band and PIoneers' Swords; 13 - Practice Swords. It concludes with Reference Notes, a Select Bibliography, four Appendices (Sword Knots; Markings on Swords; The Marking of Arms, 1912; The List of Changes) and a six page Index. The book contains 208 pages, printed in black ink, on a white matte paper stock, measuring 185 mm (w) x 250 mm (h) x 23 mm (d). It exhibits light foxing on the top edges of the pages, however, the pages within remain pristine, the photographs crisp. Near extremely fine.
