As stated in the Introduction: "The Sea Gallantry Medal is unique in that it was introduced by an Act of Parliament and not by Royal Warrant, as is the case with other orders, decorations and medals. It is an interesting decoration because over the long period it was awarded, 130 years, there have been many changes to its design and to the conditions for it being granted. It was awarded to British subjects and to Foreigners for rendering services to those in distress at sea, and whilst the majority of awards were as such, many were also made for services on coasts, in rivers, in harbours and occasionally on land.....This book is an attempt to provide a listing of all the recipients of the Sea Gallantry Medal and Sea Gallantry Medal (Foreign Services). Many of the original records of the Board of Trade and Royal Mint for these awards no longer exist, so it has not been possible to produce a definitive listing. To compile this list, use has been made of those records that do survive, together with newspaper reports, auction sales, dealers' lists, medal collections and other sources.....It is hoped that this book will be of use and interest to all who admire the gallantry of those who risked their lives to save others." It begins with a Table of Contents, followed by a List of Illustrations, an Acknowledgements and an Introduction. It is divided into four basic sections: The Sea Gallantry Medal; The Sea Gallantry Medal (Foreign Services); a Chronological List of Awards (listed in chronological order of service(s) rendered, from 1842 to 1987, which entails the bulk of the book); and Unclaimed Awards (awards not able to be presented or forwarded to the recipients as their whereabouts was unknown). It concludes with a Sources and Bibliography, along with a fifty-three page Alphabetical Index of Recipients and Vessels (with accompanying dates). The book contains 568 pages, the bulk of the book is text and interspersed with black and white photographs, printed in black ink, on a white paper stock, complemented with seven colour plates, one at the front and six at the back of the book, printed in four-colour inks, on a coated paper stock, the book weighing 1.4 kilograms and measuring 160 mm (w) x 241 mm (h) x 42 mm (d). A terrific, well-researched reference guide on the Sea Gallantry Medal. Near extremely fine.

"Bob" Scarlett has been a member of the Orders and Medals Research Society (OMRS) since the earky 1960s and is a founding member of the Life Saving Awards Research Society. A keen photographer, his photographs have been used in many books on orders, decorations and medals.
