(Heer Stahlhelm M40). A Heer M40 camouflage Stahlhelm, constructed of a magnetic molybdenum steel shell. The exterior bears an original and fully-intact muted camouflage finish consisting of the Stahlhelm’s original apple-green base coat overlaid by irregular applications of light green paint for use in summer foliage. Three rivets are distributed around the outer shell, securing the interior fixtures in place. It is also flanked by dual integrated ventilation shafts. The rim of the helmet is fully crimped, providing a smooth edge around the exterior. A magnetic metal ring surrounded the interior of the shell, secured in place with the aforementioned rivets, accommodating an additional ring previously connecting to a liner which has since been lost to time. Also emanating from the former are two magnetic metal loops, retaining a piece of the helmet’s original black leather chinstrap on the right. It is stamped on the interior of the skirt with a letter “Q”, indicating manufacture by F.W. Quist, Esslingen, flanked by a partially-legible shell size mark beginning with “6”. Just underneath the maker and size marks is a lot number which appears to read “N364”. The Stahlhelm measures 226 mm (w) x 285 mm (l) x 150 mm (h). In addition to the missing liner and chinstrap, the shell demonstrates oxidation consistent with age and field use, but the helmet continues to display nicely and is in a very fine condition.
