Germany, Heer. An Infanterie-Regiment 17 Visor Cap, with Owner Photo

(Infanterie-Regiment 17 Schirmmütze mit Bild). A well-preserved Infanterie-Regiment 17 visor cap, constructed of field-grey wool. It features reinforced side walls, fully lined on the exterior with a dark green wool cap band. Both the top and bottom edges of the cap band are trimmed with white piping, while an additional band of identical piping trims the outer edge of the crown. Pinned onto the peak of the cap is an insignia consisting of an aluminum Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 65 mm (w) x 25 mm (h). Directly underneath the eagle, the cap bears a Braunschweiger-style Totenkopf, constructed of silvered bronze. Measuring 27 mm (w) x 32 mm (h), the Totenkopf retains both of its reverse attachment prongs. Completing the exterior insignia is an aluminum tri-colour cockade, set within an oak leaf wreath of identical construction, measuring 70 mm (w) x 45 mm (h) overall. The cap band is flanked on each side by black-painted magnetic metal rivets, securing in place a multi-piece black leatherette chinstrap, itself adjusted with dual functional blackened magnetic metal buckles. When not in use, the chinstrap rests upon a protruding vulcanfibre visor, finished in a glossed black on the obverse and in a matte brown on the reverse. The interior of the side walls is fully lined with a light brown leather sweatband measuring 42 mm in width, while a grey rayon liner encompasses the interior of the structure. The crown retains a transparent plastic rhomboid moisture guard, inserted with a white paper label bearing an illegible handwritten owner’s name. Otherwise unmarked, the cap measures approximately 225 mm (w) x 280 mm (l) x 175 mm (h). Issues consistent with age and use are evident, and include exterior material fatigue (with slight mothing to the back of the cap band), deterioration of the sweatband, soiling of the liner, and some bending of the side walls. This field-used cap from a notable regiment is in an overall very fine condition. Notably, it is accompanied by a photo demonstrating it in wear, worm by members of an Infanterie-Regiment 17 band. It depicts three members with caps clearly visible, and with shoulder straps bearing numbers “17” partially visible. Set on period postcard-sized photo paper, it measures 138 mm (w) x 88 mm (h). Consistent material fatigue is visible throughout, and the reverse bears the remnants of an adhesive indicating album removal. However, the image remains clear and it is in an overall very fine condition.
