(Currency, Coins). Antique. Morgan Dollar Coins: A circular coin constructed of silver. The obverse with the bust of Liberty partially encompassed by the inscription “E. PLURIBUS UNUM”, and partially encompassed by stars with a date. Coins dated: 1878, 1880, 1881, 1883, 1884, 1885, 1886, 1888, 1921. The reverse features the image of an eagle with outstretched wings clutching arrows and an olive branch, above is the inscription “In God We Trust” and below is an open ended laurel wreath, encompassed by the inscription “United States of America One Dollar”. The edge of the coin is reeded. Measuring 37.31mm in diameter and weighing 26.1 grams. Bearing various mint marks: “S” for San Francisco, “O” for New Orleans, “D” for Denver, coins without a mint mark were minted in Philadelphia. Ranging from very good to very fine.

The obverse bears the bust of Liberty partially encompassed above with the inscription “LIBERTY”, to the left and right of the bust is the inscription “In God We Trust” and below is the date “1922” or “1923”. The reverse bears the image of an eagle clutching an olive branch with rays of light in the background. The top bears the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA E PLURIBUS UNUM”. To the left and right of the eagle is the inscription “ONE DOLLAR” and below the eagle is the word “PEACE”. The edge of the coin is reeded. Measuring 38.11mm in diameter and weighs 26.7 grams. Ranging from very good to very fine.

 

Footnote: The Morgan dollar was a dollar coin of the United States. It was minted from 1878 to 1904 and in 1921. It was later minted in 2021 as a special non-circulating coin. It was the first standard silver dollar coin minted since the Coinage Act of 1873, which had ended the free coining of silver and the production of the previous design, the Seated Liberty dollar. The Morgan dollar is named after its designer, George T. Morgan, the United States Mint Assistant Engraver. The Peace dollar was a dollar coin of the United States that was minted from 1921 to 1928, 1934 and 1935. It was minted as a commemorative coin in 2021. It was designed by Anthony de Francisci. It was the last United States dollar coin to be struck in silver for circulation.
