Germany, Luftwaffe. A Second Pattern Officer’s Dagger

(Luftwaffe Offiziersdolch). A second pattern Luftwaffe Officer’s dagger, measuring 430 mm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 260 mm-long polished magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and edges. Fully unmarked, the blade sits securely within a nickel-plated alloy upper crossguard, the obverse of which presents as a finely-detailed Luftwaffe eagle clutching a mobile swastika. It transitions into a multi-piece hilt featuring a rounded pommel, itself bearing a double-sided wreathed mobile swastika design, which securely screws in to maintain the dagger’s structural integrity. The handle grip is composed of a single piece of ribbed white celluloid, with the ribbing retaining a period original twisted bronze cord. It is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of a pebbled magnetic metal scabbard with double-sided oak leaf designs located near the tip. The upper third of the shaft features dual integral zink bands, similarly marked with oak leaves designs, each completing in a loop for the accommodation of a dagger hanger. The throat retains a functional spring catch, securely holding the dagger in place during storage, and retains dual side rivets. Fully unmarked, the dagger demonstrates issues consistent with age and use. These include oxidation of the blade, loss of finish to the nickel-plated features, minor chipping and cracking of the celluloid handle grip, some chipping of the zink rings, and oxidation of the scabbard. It is in an overall very fine condition.
