Item #EU19544
(Médaille Commémorative des Campagnes d'Afrique 1914-1917). Instituted in 1917. Type I (1914-1916). In silver, engraver marked "A. Matton" on the obverse, measuring 30 mm (w) x 42.5 mm (h), contact marks on the edge, lightly soiled original ribbon, near extremely fine.
Footnote: The Commemorative Medal for the African Campaigns was instituted on February 21, 1917 and awarded to Belgian forces who engaged German troops in and around the latter’s African colonies of Cameroon, Tanganyika and South-West Africa. This is the first version of the medal with the dates 1914-1916; a second version bears the dates 1914-1917. The names on the reverse are those of the territories and places where engagements occurred. The numbers involved were relatively small, making the medal difficult to find.
