Germany, Luftwaffe. An Officer’s Dress Dagger

(Luftwaffe Offiziersdolch). A very well-preserved Luftwaffe Officer’s dress dagger, measuring 425 mm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 265 mm-long polished magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and edges. Presenting plain, the blade sits firmly within a nickel-plated alloy upper crossguard, the obverse of which presents as a raised and finely-detailed Luftwaffe eagle clutching a mobile swastika. The seam where the blade fits through the crossguard is covered by a fully-intact brown leather buffer pad. A single piece of ribbed white celluloid composes the handle grip, with the ribbing retaining a tight length of twisted and rolled bronze wire cord. The dagger completes with a rounded pommel in the form of a double-sided gilded and wreathed mobile swastika, securely screwing in to maintain the dagger’s structural integrity. It is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of a pebbled magnetic metal shaft with double-sided raised oak leaf designs adorning the tip. The upper third of the shaft features dual integral loops decorated with raised oak leaves, each culminating in a loop for the accommodation of a dagger hanger. The throat retains a functional spring catch, firmly holding the dagger in place during storage, and is fastened with a single side rivet. Minor issues consistent with age are evident, chipping of the handle grip with possible repainting, and oxidation of the scabbard. It is in an overall near extremely fine condition.
