Gallipoli Star/ Iron Crescent. Instituted 1915 by Sultan Mohammed V. A five point star in Nickel-plated brass, with red enamels and small ball finials, the obverse presents a crescent moon with the date and cypher of the Sultan, the reverse features a horizontal pin with makers mark B.B & Co. denoting German manufacture, measures 57.28mm (w) x 57.32mm (h), weighs 27.4 grams, enamels intact, light wear, in extremely fine condition.
Footnote: The medal was instituted by Sultan Mohammed V. It was conferred in recognition of bravery during WWI to Turkish citizens, and German and Austrian allies. This medal could also be awarded to women. It is also known as the Iron Crescent or the Gallipoli Star.
