Germany, Imperial. A Prussian Observer’s Badge, c. 1918

(Beobachterabzeichen). Constructed of silvered brass with multi-coloured enamels, the obverse consisting of an oval oak leaf wreath, joined together at the bottom by a bow tie ribbon, topped by a German State Crown, set around a central square enameled applique consisting of a black and white checkered centrepiece within a red border, the reverse with a clip hinge and vertical pinback meeting a flat wire catch, unmarked, measuring 44.60 mm (w) x 71.78 mm (h), weighing 19.7 grams, with minor flecking and loss of finish evident to the enamel and metal, respectively, a late-war example in near extremely fine condition.
