Germany. A Medal of Honour of the German Naval Observatory, by H. Lorenz & Sohn

Constructed of bronze with a coppered finish, the obverse bearing a raised and finely-detailed female figure seated atop a globe and naval equipment and in front of a seascape, the reverse bearing a depiction of the German Naval Observatory executed in exceptional detail, circumscribed by an inscription of “DIE DEUTSCHE SEEWARTE IHREN MITARBEITERN ZUR SEE” (“THE GERMAN NAVAL OBSERVATORY (HYDROGRAPHIC OFFICE) FOR ITS EMPLOYEES AT SEA”), above an inscription of “GESTIFTET AM TAGE DER EINWEIHUNG D. 14. SEPT. 1881” (“INSTITUTED ON THE DAY OF ITS INAUGURATION 14. SEPT. 1881”), engraver marked “LORENZ F. HAMBURG” and maker marked “H. LORENZ U. SOHN, HAMBURG”, the edge marked “BRONZE”, measuring 57 mm in diameter, in extremely fine condition.
