(Orden Philips des Großmütigen, Großkreuz). Issued 1849-1918. The breast badge consisting of a silver eight-pointed rayed star; the obverse with a central light blue enameled medallion depicting the rightward facing outline of Philip in silver gilt, surrounded by a white ring of enamels, inscribed “SI DEUS NOBISCUM QUIS CONTRA NOS” (Latin - If God is with us, who shall be against us?) in Gold; the reverse plain, with a vertical pinback, and a functional hinge/catch assembly; measuring 82.63 mm (w) x 82.97 mm (h); weighing 49.7 grams. 2) The sash badge consisting of a Gold cross pattee with white enameled arms; the obverse with a central light blue enameled medallion depicting the rightward facing outline of Philipp in silver gilt, surrounded by a white ring of enamels, inscribed “SI DEUS NOBISCUM QUIS CONTRA NOS” (Latin - If God is with us, who shall be against us?) in Gold; the reverse with a central light blue enameled medallion with a silver gilt Hessian lion, surrounded by a white ring of enamels, inscribed “LUDOVICUS II MAGN(us) DUX HASSIAE INSTIT(uit)” (Latin - Ludwig II Grand Duke of Hessen) in Gold; on a double loop for suspension from its period original sash ribbon; measuring 59.84 mm (w) x 60.55 mm (h); weighing 32.5 grams; in overall virtually mint condition.

 

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
