(Große Medaille für Kunst und Wissenschaft). Instituted 3 July 1857 by Prince Georg Viktor. (1903-1918 issue). Constructed of gilded silver, the obverse consisting of a circular laurel leaf wreath, joined together at the bottom by a bow tie ribbon, topped by a red and white enameled crown with a pebbled gilt frame, in turn culminating in a suspension loop retaining a period original ribbon, featuring a central blue enameled disc, in turn overlaid by a black enameled eight-pointed radiant star with its arms highlighted in gilt, featuring a central white enameled disc overlaid by a red enameled Anchor Cross, topped by a gilt monogram of Prince Georg Viktor, the reverse with five scalloped clips securing in place a backplate which maintains the decoration’s structure, unmarked, measuring 44.42 mm (w) x 59.10 mm (h), weighing 32.5 grams, with a small chip visible to the right side of the crown’s enamel, in overall extremely fine condition.
