In hollow silver gilt, with partially white enameled arms; the obverse with a central enamel medallion, depicting St. Henry wielding a tri-pronged scepter, surrounded by a blue enameled ring, inscribed “Frid(ericus), Aug(ustus) d(ei) Garatia) Rex Sax(oniae) Instrauravit (Latin - Frederick August by the Grace of God, King of Saxony); with the outer edges of the Maltese cross in white enamels and green enameled florets between the arms of the cross; the reverse with a silver gilt and enamel center applique, surrounded by a blue enameled ring, inscribed “Virtuti in Bello” (Latin - For bravery in war); suspended from a large swivel crown suspension from a correct replacement sash; measuring 73.66 mm (w) x 117.9 mm (h); weighing 98.3 grams; in overall extremely fine condition.
Footnote: This Order of St. Henry Grand Cross was awarded a total of six times between 1917 and 1918. The recipients were: 1) King Ludwig III of Bavaria, 2) King Wilhelm II of Württemberg, 3) Kaiser Karl I of Austria, 4) Wilhelm Prince of the German Reich and Prussia, 5) Ludendorff General of the Infantry.
