Germany, SS. A Waffen-SS Officer’s Visor Cap

Item #G49931

$3,221
(Waffen-SS Schirmmütze für Offizier). An extremely well-preserved Waffen-SS Officer’s visor cap, constructed of a high-quality field-grey wool twill. It features reinforced side walls, fully lined on the exterior with a smooth black doeskin wool cap band. Both the top and bottom edges of the cap band are trimmed with lengths of white wool piping, while an additional band of identical piping lines the outer edge of the crown. The peak demonstrates the outline of a second pattern SS cap eagle which has since been lost to time, while the centre of the cap band similarly bears the outline of a second pattern Totenkopf insignia which has also been removed. A pebbled magnetic metal button flanks each side of the cap band, securing in place a chinstrap constructed of twisted and rolled silver aluminum wire, itself adjusted with two functional sliding knots of identical construction. The chinstrap rests upon a protruding vulcanfibre visor which is finished in a glossed black on the obverse and in a matte light brown on the reverse. The interior of the side walls is lined with a brown leather sweatband, perforated through the forehead with an array of ventilation holes, measuring 42 mm in width. It is also fully encompassed by a multi-piece silver-grey rayon liner, with the crown retaining an intact transparent plastic rhomboid moisture guard. The guard bears the remnants of an indeterminate maker’s mark, indicating that the cap is a privately-purchased example demonstrating superior quality. An empty slot set into the guard accommodates an optional nametag. The cap measures approximately 230 mm (w) x 250 mm (l) x 170 mm (h). Minor, age-appropriate soiling is evident to the exterior wool and highlighted by the missing insignia, and there is some fatigue to the leather sweatband and interior soiling consistent with light usage, but the cap demonstrates no damage or mothing.. It is in an overall near extremely fine condition.
