Vatican. An Order of St. Sylvester and of the Golden Spur in Gold, Knight, c. 1900

(Ordine die San Silvestro e dello Speron d'Oro). Instituted in 1841. Of superb quality and manufacture, In Gold with hand etched detailing, featuring blue and white enamels, weighing 13.5 grams, measuring 39.5 mm (w) x 49.2 mm (h) inclusive of its laterally-pierced ball suspension, light crazing evident on the arms at 9 and 12 o'clock on the reverse, replacement ribbon with safety pin attachment, extremely fine.

Footnote: The Order of St. Sylvester and of the Golden Spur was instituted on October 31, 1841 by Pope Gregory XVI and awarded for civil and military services, in four grades: Grand Cross, Commander with Star, Commander and Knight.
