Netherlands, Kingdom. An Order of Orange-Nassau, III Class Commander Case, by M.J.Goudsmit

 (Ordre van Oranje-Nassau). Instituted in 1892. Hardshelled design on both the lid and base with a orange thatched-look cloth exterior, the lid bearing the Netherlands coat-of-arms in gold-coloured ink, inside lid lined in blue satin, padded and maker marked ""M. J. GOUDSMIT / BIJOUTIER / Spécialité de Croix & Ruban d'Ordres / Fournisseur de lq Cour & de la Chancellerie / LA HAYE"", the maker mark surmounted by the Royal crown, a blue cloth-wrapped cardboard insert placed within the blue cloth-lined base and housing a raised platform in black felt with a recessed medal bed for the badge, push release closure, measuring 148 mm (w) x 200 mm (h) x 37 mm (d), wear, scuffing and sunning evident on the exterior, the interior without interruptions in the fabrics, fine.

Footnote: The Order of Orange-Nassau is a civil and military Dutch order of chivalry founded on April 4, 1892 by the Queen regent Emma, acting on behalf of her under-age daughter Queen Wilhelmina. The order is a chivalric order open to ""everyone who has earned special merits for society"". These are people who deserve appreciation and recognition from society for the special way in which they have carried out their activities. The lower grades of the order are comparable with the ranks of the Order of the British Empire in the United Kingdom, but titles, prefixes or post-nominals (other than academic ones) are not used in the Netherlands (the only exception being for members of the Military William Order).

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
