(Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana). Instituted March 3, 1951 by President Luigi Einaudi. Type I. (1951-2001). A sash badge consisting of an enameled white four armed cross with ball finials in silver gilt, featuring detailed Italian eagles in each quadrant, center exhibiting a superposed five pointed star also in silver gilt, suspending by large gilded Mural Crown with enamels details, reverse mirrors the obverse, measuring 70.7mm (w) x 99.2mm (h – inclusive of crown suspension), worn on a full length sash, enamels intact, star on obverse slightly loose, remains in extremely fine condition. The star of the order features an eight-point star with clusters of five faceted rays, the obverse presents a superimposed enameled white four armed cross with ball finials in silver gilt, featuring detailed Italian eagles in each quadrant, center exhibiting a superposed five pointed star also in silver gilt, the reverse presents a vertical pin suspension with makers cartouche of S. JOHNSON MILANO ROMA, marked on the 9 o’clock ring with 800 silver fineness and an 858 silver mark, measures 83.2mm (w) x 83.3mm (h), weighs 97.4 grams, enamels intact, hinge and catch functional, in extremely fine condition. Accompanied by a small boutonniere of the Order’s ribbon.
Contained in its original case of issue featuring a green leatherette exterior with a Republic Italiana stamp on the lid, the interior lid in a yellow silk marked CRAVANZOLA SUCC. GARDINO, the base presents a partially recessed yellow velvet medalbed with storage for the sash, measures 145mm (w) x 297mm (h) x 40mm (h), minimal war, hinge and catch functional, in extremely fine condition.
