Item #M0424-9

$1,000

The exterior is fabricated from a greenish-brown pressed wool, with shoulder straps on both shoulders, the upper of which is in black wool, with Sergeant rank insignia in fine silvered bullion wire, the edge trimmed in angled rolled silvered bullion wire, with a strap on the reverse and secured in place via a single silvered button bearing the Royal Hungarian Air Force insignia. Both sides of the collar are adorned with a bronze prop and wings insignia, sewn in place to the four die-holes at the points, with a single hook and eye closure at the opening. The front has four pockets, one on each breast and two at the waist, each of the four pockets with fold over button down flaps with reinforced button holes and large bronze-finished metal buttons bearing the Air Force insignia, the buttons maker marked "ASSMANN & SÖHNE LÜDENSCHEID" on their reverses, as are all the large buttons on the tunic.

The right breast pocket has two horizontal loops, where an award badge once existed but has been lost to time. Above the right pocket is an Air Force pilots qualification badge, the eagle in fine gold-coloured bullion wire, with seven gold-coloured sequins on each wing, highlighted by red threading giving definition to the eye and feet, surmounted by the royal crown in gold-coloured bullion wire, in various textures, with touches of red and green embroidery in the base of the crown, the badge with a black wool backer. There is a ribbon bar sewn in place above the left breast pocket, with four fabric ribbons: 1. Fire Cross (A. Tuzkereszt) with Fire Cross clasp in bronze with a silvered wreath and swords, with 2 metal vertical stripes denoting 2 wounds; 2. NCO's Long Service Decoration (Szolgálati Díszérem); 3. Upper Hungary Medal 1938 (Felvidéki Emlékérem); and Commemorative Medal for the Liberation of Transylvania 1940 (Erdély Felszabadításáért Emlékérem), the ribbon bar measuring 162 mm (w) x 15 mm (h).

The front has a vertical row of five large bronze-finished metal buttons bearing the Air Force insignia on the right side, facing an equal number of reinforced button holes on the left side. Passing through the second button hole from the top and sewn in place on the underside is an Iron Cross 2nd Class 1939 ribbon. The left sleeve is adorned with a triangular division patch composed of three strips in fine silvered bullion wire (denoting professional NCO), sewn in place to a black triangular wool patch, the tunic single-vented at the rear. The inside is unlined, stamped in black ink in four lines of text within a vertical box "RA / 94/1 / OK /MB" denoting the manufacture year of 1941, just to the left of the venting. Both shoulders have olive green cotton patches that are stuffed with white cotton, to act as shoulder pads, both of which are torn along their seams and exposing their contents. The armpit openings are lined in a strip of olive green cotton, as is one side of the venting at the rear. It measures 410 mm across the shoulders x 760 mm in length.

The accompanying cap is fabricated from a greenish-brown pressed wool. It is designed with fold down flaps that are sewn into place on both sides and at the rear, along with two small silvered bronze buttons at the front bearing the Air Force insignia, to ensure the flaps stay up. The peak at the front has a cockade mesauring 30 mm in diameter, the centrepiece of which is painted in the Hungarian national colours of red, white and green, the centrepiece ringed in angled rolled silvered bullion wire, itself surrounded by four rows of silvered twisted wire, with two pairs of strands of fine silvered bullion wire emanating from the either side of the cockade and disappearing behind the front strap, the strands designating the rank as that of Sergeant. The visor is stiff and has experienced a crack on the right side, forcing it to curve inward. The left side is adorned with an NCO's Air Force badge illustrating the eagle with curved wings surmounted by the Royal Hungarian crown in silver, measuring 60.7 mm (w) x 39 mm (h) and backed by a patch in black wool. The inside is lined in olive green cotton, the dome stamped in black ink with the manufacturer's information " MOLNÁR JÁNOS / egyenruházati cikkek / egyensapka készites / Bpest. VII. Szovetség u. 2fc" (János Molnár of Budapest) and the size "56". The opening incorporates a 33 mm wide sweatband in a shiny tawny brown leather, with light soling from active use. The cap measures approximately 280 mm in width x 130 mm in height when lying flat.

As worn.
