In silver, obverse illustrating two riflemen, the one at the left standing and holding the rifle at his side, the other at the right kneeling an in a firing position, inscribed "IN DEFENCE" above, engraver marked "J. MOORE F." below the men, reverse engraved "Challenge Medal" on an arched ribbon banner above "No. 2 Coy.", within a full-wreath of laurel leaves, measuring 43 mm (w) x 55.5 mm (h) inclusive of its ornate suspension, housed within a silver ring frame and under clear convex glass disks on both sides for presentation, "V.R." (Volunteer Rifles) clasp affixed to its lightly soiled original ribbon, tri-claw hanger with pinback, a few contact marks visible on both sides of the medal, the glass free of chips and marks, better than very fine.
