(Orden vom Zähringer Löwen, Ritterkreuz II. Klasse). Instituted 26 December 1812 by Grand Duke Karl Friedrich. (1866-1918 issue). Constructed of silver with multi-coloured enamels consisting of a narrow Cross Pattée with its arms joined through the quadrants by arabesque latticework, the obverse with green enameled arms, bearing a central white enameled medallion with a detailed and hand-painted depiction of Zähringen Castle, with a ribbed gilt ring, the reverse bearing a central red enameled medallion overlaid by a gilt lion rampant, within a ribbed gilt ring, the twelve o’clock arm with a suspension loop retaining a period original parade-styled ribbon, the six o’clock arm maker marked “Z” for Joseph Zuber, Karlsruhe, measuring 39.76 mm (w) x 42.64 mm (h), weighing 18.5 grams, with minor flecking and tarnishing evident to the enamels and silver, respectively, and detachment of the ribbon from its embroidered mount, in near extremely fine condition.
