Item #A1011
Price:
A finely-detailed, well-preserved miniature watercolour portrait depicting a 19th century Italian Officer wearing an indeterminate order and breast star. The subject is in full uniform with epaulettes and a bicorn-style hat with a multi-coloured fringe clutched under his arm. It is set within a gilded brass border with an intact glass face, in turn situated within a wooden frame with an olive-drab velvet liner surrounding the image and with a gold bullion wire fringe emanating from the edges. The reverse is riveted backer lined with dark green rayon, while the top of the frame retains a stylized bronze ribbon suspension with a reverse loop. The image is signed “IDA CALZOLARI” for the noted Italian miniaturist and portrait painter (born 1936). It measures 11 cm (w) x 14.5 cm (h) overall. Some fatigue is visible to both the velvet and wire fringe, but the image remains pristine and in an overall near extremely fine condition.
