(Bayern Pickelhaube M1895 für Mannschaften). A Bavarian Army Enlisted personnel Model 1895 Pickelhaube, constructed of a boiled and blackened leather shell. Situated atop the crown is a gilded brass spike perforated around the neck with ventilation holes, and which is secured in place with a baseplate featuring four rivets. A bar of identical construction emanates from the back of the baseplate and extends down to a boiled and blackened leather neck guard. Riveted to the peak is an insignia is a brass plate in the form of a central crowned Bavarian coat of arms, in turn flanked by crowned lions rampant and set above a banner bearing an inscription of “IN TREUE FEST” (“IN TRUE LOYALTY”). The plate measures 11 cm (w) x 9.5 cm (h). It is flanked on each side by brass studs which secure in place a replacement black leather chinstrap, adjusted with dual functional bronze buckles. Situated underneath the left stud is a non-magnetic metal cockade painted in a Bavarian blue and white (with the silvered base metal substitute white) national colour motif. The interior is plain and unmarked. The Pickelhaube measures approximately 17 cm (w) x 25.5 cm (l) x 21 cm (h) (inclusive of spike). Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include material fatigue of the shell and other leather features (with some distortion of the structure of the former), oxidation with consequent loss of finish to the brass fixtures, and the loss of the interior hardware. It is in an overall fair condition.
