Constructed of light bronze, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, affixed to a feinzink backplate with a horizontal pinback, the obverse bearing a raised mounted Teutonic knight wielding a lance and shield, topped by years “1181-1919” in Roman numerals, above an inscription of “NAER OOSTLAND WILLEN WY RYDEN” (“WE WANT TO RIDE TO THE EAST”), the reverse bearing the central raised coat of arms of the von Manteuffel family, superimposed over a cross, with the quadrants bearing raised initials “SSVK” (for Soldaten-Siedlungs-Verband-Kurland or Courland Soldiers Settlement Organization), the obverse designer marked “D” for Emil Doepler, measuring 33.12 mm in diameter, weighing 26.5 grams (inclusive of ribbon and backplate), in extremely fine condition, accompanied by a matching miniature medal, of identical construction and appearance, measuring 15.88 mm in diameter, weighing 2.9 grams (inclusive of ribbon), in extremely fine condition.
