Germany, RLB. A VM40 Civil Defense Gas Mask

(Reichsluftschutzbund Volksgasmaske VM40). A mint and unissued Reichsluftschutzbund (Reich Air Protection League/RLB) VM40 gas mask, constructed of slate-grey synthetic rubber. It features eyepieces consisting of aluminum rings with intact transparent plastic lenses. The mouth features a magnetic metal intact ring with functional interior flaps, accommodating a separate filter, itself constructed of an aluminum shell with pristine filter. Straps constructed of identical slate-grey synthetic rubber emanate from the back and allow for an adjustable fit. The intact ring bears a raised code and mark of “M” for Männer (men), indicating a large-sized fit. The mask is accompanied by its period original instruction manual, constructed of beige paper stock with illustrations accompanied by detailed captions for proper wear. Both the mask and manuel are concealed within an original box of issue, constructed of grey card stock and measuring 21 cm (w) x 30 cm (l) x 6.5 cm (h). Fully intact and unused, the mask is in a near mint condition.
