Instituted 10 May 1877. (1932-1947 issue). Constructed of gilded bronze with multi-coloured enamels, consisting of a Romanian Cross with blue enameled arms, the quadrants joined by finely-detailed gilt eagles, the obverse with a central red enameled medallion bearing a gilt monogram of Carol I, surrounded by a ring of blue enamel with a gilt inscription of “IN FIDE SALUS” (“IN FAITH IS THE SALVATION”), in turn within a gilt ring bearing green enameled oak leaves, the reverse with a red enameled medallion bearing an institution date of “1877”, within a gilt ring with green enameled oak leaves, the twelve o’clock arm with crossed swords and a hollow gilt crown bearing a suspension loop with a period original ribbon, unmarked, measuring 43.86 mm (w) x 70.09 mm (inclusive of suspension), weighing 30.7 grams, minor flecking of enamels and tarnishing of gilt evident, otherwise in near extremely fine condition.
