(Heer Schirmmütze für Gebirgsjäger). A Heer Gebirgsjäger Officer’s visor cap, constructed of field-grey wool. It features reinforced side walls, fully lined on the exterior with a dark wool cap band. Both the top and bottom edges of the cap band are trimmed with light green piping, with an additional band of identical piping trimming the outer edge of the crown. Stitched onto the peak is an insignia consisting of a dark green wool backer bearing a hand-embroidered silver aluminum wire Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 65 mm (w) x 32 mm (h) overall. Directly below the eagle, the centre of the cap band bears an insignia consisting of a padded dark green wool backer bearing a silver aluminum wire oak leaf wreath, surrounding a central aluminum cockade with a red wool centrepiece. The cap is flanked on each side by pebbled aluminum buttons securing in place a chinstrap constructed of multiple rows of twisted and rolled silver aluminum wire, adjusted with dual sliding knots of identical construction. The chinstrap rests upon a protruding vulcan fibre visor, finished in black on the obverse and in light brown on the reverse. The interior of the side walls is surrounded by a brown leather sweatband, while the body is also encompassed by a dark grey rayon liner. The crown retains a fully-intact transparent plastic rhomboid moisture guard. Unmarked, the cap measures approximately 23.5 cm (w) x 25.5 cm (l) x 16 cm (h). Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include moderate but consistent material fatigue to the exterior wool, including sporadic mothing, some oxidation of the wire insignia, and deterioration of the sweatband. Demonstrating honest age and wear with no evident postwar modification, the cap remains in a very fine condition.
