A rare and exceptionally high-quality example of a privately-purchased Gallipoli Star (a.k.a. Turkish War Medal 1915), constructed of silver with enamels, consisting of a five-pointed star completing in ball finials, the obverse with red enameled arms, overlaid by a raised and silvered crescent, surrounding a silvered Tughra of Sultan Mehmed V above an Islamic calendar date of 1333 (AD 1915), the reverse with an elongated rectangular depression featuring a block hinge and horizontal pinback meeting a rounded catch, unmarked but demonstrating the characteristics of German jeweller manufacture, measuring 58.94 mm (w) x 57.32 mm (h), weighing 30.6 grams, accompanied by an original presentation case, constructed of a light wooden frame with a faux maroon leather exterior liner, the lid bearing a gilt star and crescent moon, the interior with a white rayon lid liner and intact hinge cover, with a slotted black velvet medal bed, closing with a functional metal spring catch with exterior stud release, unmarked, measuring 90 mm (w) x 90 mm (l) x 22 mm (h), with some flecking and surface grime visible to the enamel of the badge and with minor material fatigue visible to the case, a striking example of an Officer’s privately-purchased award in extremely fine condition.
