Yugoslavia, Kingdom. An Officer’s Naval Dagger, c.1940

(1927-1941 Issue). A Royal Yugoslavian officer’s naval dagger, German made, measuring 394mm in total length. The nickel-plated steel blade, magnetic, with semi-sharp edges and a sharp tip, measures 280mm. Each side of the blade has been etched with foliage designs, one side presenting the crowned cypher of Peter II Yugoslavia, both sides are unmarked on the ricasso. The blade sits securely in a brass handle, with a thin leather washer around the base, exhibiting marks common to extraction from the scabbard. The crossguard is period replacement in cast tombc, with swirl pattern at each end. Inset into the obverse of the crossguard is a functional push-button release connecting to the spring clip which emerges from the blade’s ricasso. The handle is composed of a single piece of polished and lacquered bone with carved ribbing. The ribs spiral around the handle and feature an inset twisted wire, connecting to the pommel, which presents an intertwining knit pattern. The top of the twisted wire near the crossguard has been taped to the handle as it is no longer secure under the brass fitting. Wrapped around the top of the handle is a matching portapee with a white, blue and yellow threaded cord and matching acorn. The scabbard, constructed of gilded bronze shaft with a pebbled design around the majority, the bottom third of the obverse presenting a bearded male face with trident, while the throat presents a crowned anchor. Two bands feature floral patterns with brass rings, connecting to a black material hanger with a brass clasp on each with floral designs. The scabbard measures 295mm in total length, bearing evident wear and contact, both the blade and scabbard are in very fine condition. Together with hangers, these in very good condition.
