Latvia, Republic. A State Border Guard Badge, by S. Bercs, c.1925

A diamond shaped badge of bronze and silvered bronze and multi-coloured enamels, the obverse bears the red lion of the Latvian coat of arms and the silver griffin of the Latvian coat of arms, between them is a red and white enamel striped post with two upwards facing crossed swords in the centre, the top of the post is a green enamel shield and three oak leaves, below is the date “1.VI.28”, all encompassed by an ornate border, the reverse is plain and bears a screw back, the plate is marked “S. BERCS RIGA METALS”, measuring 42.34 mm (w) x 49.33 mm (h), very fine.
