(Sturmabteilung Dienstmütze). A very well-preserved SA-Gruppe Bayerische Ostmark service kepi for ranks Sturmführer through Sturmhauptführer. It is constructed of a rounded canister with a dyed blue wool base surrounded by a layer of light brown cotton twill, the latter tapering toward the front where it is pinned in the centre with a gilded brass button. The crown is flat and is trimmed along the outer edge with a length of blue and white piping, with dual ventilation holes set into the sides, all reinforced with magnetic metal grommets. Pinned onto the peak is a first pattern SA-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, constructed of silvered and blackened bronze and measuring 38 mm (w) x 26 mm (h). The lower edge is flanked on each side by a single brown painted magnetic metal button securing in place a multi-piece brown leather chinstrap, adjusted with dual functional brown painted magnetic metal buckles. Completing the exterior features is a protruding visor with a card stock core fully lined in an identical cotton twill. The interior is fully lined with a brown leather sweatband and encompassed by a multi-piece light blue cotton liner. The crown retains a fully-intact transparent plastic rhomboid moisture guard. A black ink size mark of “57” is visible under the former. Otherwise unmarked, the kepi measures approximately 17 cm (w) x 24 cm (l) x 12 cm (h). Minor issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include some soiling to the exterior material, distortion of the shell structure, and soiling of the interior liner.
