Instituted in 1877. In silver, a large silver medal presenting the right facing bust of Queen Victoria, surrounded by the inscription VICTORIA 1ST JANUARY 1877, the reverse presents the inscription EMPRESS OF INDIA in English, Urdu and Hindi, with a geometric border around the exterior rim, worn on a swivel straight bar suspension and from original ribbon, measures 56.9mm (w) x 64.8mm (h), weighs 104.5 grams (including ribbon), large edge knock to 6 o’clock rim, light contact marks elsewhere, lovely patina, in very fine condition.
Footnote: The Medal was issued in Gold and Silver. Gold Medals were awarded to Indian princes and high-ranking British Officials while Silver Medals were awarded to Indian civilians and Officers and men of British and Indian regiments serving in India.
