Instituted 1965. In silver gilt, a red enamelled Greek Cross with a white enamel cross in the quadrants along with clusters of short smooth rays, the obverse medallion presents the figure of the Patriarch Athenagoras I, surrounded by a Greek inscription, the reverse is plain with a Greek inscription in the center, the badge is surmounted by a crown, measures 34.54mm (w) x 61.00mm (h – inclusive of crown suspension), weighs 25.7 grams (including ribbon), worn on original ribbon, enamels intact, very fine condition.

Contained in original case of issue, exterior presents a Greek cross and Greek inscription, interior presents a crème coloured velvet medal bed, maker marked at base of interior lid denoting Kelaidis, Athens manufacture, measures 65.81mm (w) x 139.19mm (l) x 21.53mm (d), hinge and clasp functional, light wear to exterior, very fine condition.

 

Footnote: The Commemorative Crosses were issued following the Catholic-Orthodox Joint Declaration of 1965, between Pope Paul VI and Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras I, which rescinded the excommunications of 1054.
