Germany, Heer. A Flak/Artillery Hauptmann’s Service Tunic

(Waffenrock für Hauptmann der Flak/Artillerie). A well-preserved Heer Flak/Artillery Hauptmann’s service tunic, constructed of a field-grey cotton/wool-blended twill. It features a turned-down collar, fully lined on the obverse with a layer of smooth green wool. The collar is flanked on each side by tabs constructed of a dark green wool base with a buckram core, bearing dual machine-embroidered silver aluminum wire insignia bisected by red threaded bands. Each tab measures 45 mm (w) x 75 mm (l) overall. The shoulders are flanked by boards, both of which are constructed of red wool with card stock cores, bear four bands of silver aluminum wire piping, and are pinned with two gilded bronze rank pips. Measuring 35 mm (w) x 110 mm (l), each board is secured in place with machine stitching at the outer edge and with pebbled magnetic metal buttons on the inner edge. The cuff of each sleeve is rolled up to a depth of 100 mm, secured in place with two pieces of machine stitching (one of which has been severed on the right arm). Each breast flap features two pockets, with the uppermost pockets pleated, all opening with scalloped horizontal flaps with reinforced buttonholes meeting pebbled magnetic metal buttons. Stitched onto the tunic just above the upper right pocket is an insignia consisting of a dark green wool backer bearing a hand-embroidered Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 100 mm (w) x 45 mm (h) overall. The tunic closes with eight pebbled magnetic metal buttons on the right flap meeting an equal number of reinforced buttonholes on the left flap, while the both seams are trimmed with full-length bands of red piping. The interior is fully encompassed by a multi-piece cotton/rayon-blended liner which transitions into a pinstripe design through the arms. Unmarked, the tunic measures approximately 430 mm across the shoulders, with an arm length of 595 mm, and an overall body length of 795 mm. Issues consistent with age and moderate wear are evident, and include minor material fatigue throughout the exterior material, two patch repairs of the interior liner, and minor soiling (particularly to the collar). The tunic is in an overall very fine condition.
