(Goldene Verdienstmedaille). Instituted 30 September 1866 by Grand Duke Friedrich I. (1869-1881 issue). Constructed of gilded silver, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, the obverse consisting of a leftward-facing profile of Grand Duke Friedrich I, circumscribed by name and title, the reverse with a central inscription of “FÜR VERDIENST” (“FOR MERIT”), within an oak leaf wreath tied together at the bottom by ribbon, unmarked, measuring 40.49 mm (w) x 46.86 mm (h), weighing 35.6 grams, accompanied by its period original presentation case, constructed of heavy card stock with a faux red leather exterior, the lid with a gold embossed monogram of Grand Duke Friedrich I, the interior with a white satin-type lid liner and a depressed blue velvet medal bed, opening with a functional metal spring catch with exterior stud release and a functional magnetic metal hinge, unmarked, measuring 58 mm (w) x 58 mm (l) x 20 mm (h), in near extremely fine condition.
