Constructed of silvered tombak, the obverse consisting of a Wehrmacht eagle perched on top of a wreathed mobile swastika, in turn situated above a trapezoidal plaque bearing a raised date of “1939”, the reverse with a block hinge and tapering vertical pinback meeting a flat wire catch, unmarked but demonstrating the characteristics of a documented variation produced by an unknown manufacturer as examined on pages 556-561 of “The Iron Cross 1 Class” by Dietrich Maerz and George Stimson (2010), measuring 45.24 mm (w) x 30.76 mm (h), weighing 10.3 grams, accompanied by a mis-matched but period original presentation case, constructed of a light wooden frame with a faux black leather exterior liner, the interior with a white rayon lid liner and intact hinge cover, the former bearing an “LDO” logo, with a slotted black felt medal bed, closing with a functional metal spring catch with exterior stud release, unmarked, measuring 70 mm (w) x 70 mm (l) x 22 mm (h), the clasp demonstrates a consistent patina and moderate material fatigue is visible to the case, in overall better than very fine condition.
