The unit was raised as the 38th Middlesex Rifle Volunteers and re-numbered 20th in 1880. It was attached to the Rifle Brigade in 1881. On April 1, 1908, it was transferred to the new Territorial Force as the 28th County of London (Artists Rifles). In 1947, it became 21 Special Air Service (Artists).
