Portugal, Kingdom. An Order of St. James, Grand Cross Collar, c. 1930

(Ordem Militar de Sant'Iago da Espada). Instituted 1175. Type III. 1918-Present. In silver gilt, consisting of a chain composed of twelve finely enamelled red, green, and white badges of the order, alternating with twelve delicate green enamelled bow-tied laurel wreaths, including hook-backed clasp at the neck joining the two ends together with a hand etched wreath on the obverse, measuring 760mm in length, accompanied by the badge of the collar, consisting of a pleasant enamelled red St. James cross surrounded by an enamelled green palm wreath featuring a white enamelled ribbon depicting the inscription SCIENCIAS, LETRAS E ARTES (Science, Literature, and Arts), suspended by enamelled a green laurel wreath, measuring 51.3mm (w) x 102.3mm (h - inclusive of laurel suspension), with plain reverse, jewellers mark “A” on integral ring of cross, minor lost of enamels, evident on green with toned silver in the reverse, extremely fine.
