(Eesti Punase Risti teenetemärk). Instituted in 1920 by the Estonian Red Cross Society. A rare die stamped star in silver, consisting of eight beaded arms with clusters of individual faceted rays in each quadrant, 12 o'clock arm having been privately altered to include a handmade set of oak leaves and acorn, obverse centre presenting a red enamelled cross with white enamel and gilt borders, central medallion with three Estonian lions in blue enamel on a gold enamel background, with a national colour surround and silver gilt oak leaves, reverse with privately constructed backplate affixed to cross via central screwpost, dual horizontal stays and a principle pin assembly, measuring 83 mm (w) x 81 mm (h), weighs 85.8 grams, minor enamel contact, oak leaf slightly loose, lovely patina, in near extremely fine condition.

 

Footnote: The Order of the Estonian Red Cross was established by the Estonian Red Cross Society in 1920. In 1936, it was adopted by the Estonian Parliament in the Decorations Act, which recognised it as a national award. It was later suspended during the Soviet occupation, but it was renewed in 1994 following the restoration of Estonian independence.
