(Orden del Merito Civil). Instituted King Alfonso XII in 1926. Franco Era (1938-1975). A Grand Cross Badge in silver gilt, consisting of a blue enamelled Anchor cross with clusters of rays in each quadrant, obverse centre featuring a blue border inscribed by AL MÉRITO CIVIL (To Civil Merit), with surmounted Imperial crown, suspending by a nicely enameled green laurel wreath also in silver gilt, the reverse plain with two rivets for the blue enamelled badge and two cut prongs connecting the surmounting crown, measures 48.5mm (w) x 74.9mm (h – inclusive of wreath suspension and integral ring), weighs 32.7 grams, enamels intact, lovely patina, in extremely fine condition.
Accompanied by a sash of the order, bow missing and ends partially connected with thread, otherwise in very fine condition.
Footnote: The Order of Civil Merit (Orden del Mérito Civil) was established by King Alfonso XII/Alphonso XII on June 25, 1926. It was abolished by the Second Spanish Republic in 1933 but reinstated by General Francisco Franco in 1942.
