He signed his Particulars of Recruit Drafted Under Military Service Act 1917 Paper at No. 2 Military District with the 1st Depot Battalion, 2nd Battalion Central Ontario Regiment on February 16, 1918 in Hamilton, Ontario, naming his next-of-kin as his father, John McCarthy of Copper Cliff, Ontario, stating that he had no previous military service, that he was single and that his trade was that of Farmer.
