He signed his Attestation Paper on February 8, 1916 in London, at the age of 35, naming his next-of-kin as his father, Mr. William West of London, stating that he had two years' previous military service with the 6th Field Battery, that he was not married and that his trade was that of Auto Repairer and Driver. The Canadian Army Service Corps was charged with supplying the forces with transportation, food and workshops.
