Footnote: Hugh McLeod was born on July 6, 1895 in Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. He signed his Particulars of Recruit Drafted Under Military Service Act 1917, on February 22, 1918, at Military District No. 6, 1st Depot Battalion, Nova Scotia Regiment in Halifax, Nova Scotia, naming his next-of-kin as his father, D.H. McLeod of Sydney, stating that he had no previous military service, that he was Single and that his trade was that of Electrician (his letter and number 351425 GR. under the Military Service Act). He was later transferred to the 25th Infantry Battalion.
