A WWII 48th Highlanders Regimental Lucky Pocket Piece by Cairn-Craft of Toronto - Bronze, obverse illustrating the insignia of the 48th Highlanders, inscribed "FORWARD THE 48th" below and surrounded by the inscription "THE 48th HIGHLANDERS", reverse illustrating a hand holding four Ace cards and a Joker, inscribed "THUMBS UP" above and "ACES HIGH" below, 32 mm, mint. Accompanied by a card insert inscribed "Regimental Lucky Pocket Piece", 25 c (price), Suitable for giving as souvenir or sweetheart... something as a token of remembrance. On sale throughout the city, or by mail from CAIRN-CRAFT CREATIONS 412a Somerhill Ave. Toronto", in its original, un-opened glassine package, foil stamp inscribed "CAIRN CRAFT CREATIONS TORONTO CANADA" intact on the front, card and package also mint. Footnote: Although regimental coins are quite common today, they are a relatively new phenomenon in the Canadian Army, growing in popularity to such a widespread context and usage over the past few decades. These coins do have one early forerunner from the Second World War. Four versions were minted by Cairn-Craft Creations of Toronto, Ontario, called a "Regimental Lucky Pocket Piece" and retailed for twenty-five cents. The purchaser, whether a member of the subject unit or a relative or admirer, received a coin with the insignia and unit name on the obverse and a common good luck wish on the reverse. The four versions minted included the Royal Canadian Air Force, the 48th Highlanders of Canada, The Toronto Scottish, and the Irish Regiment of Canada. The coins are hard to find and it is even rarer to find one still in its original packaging.
