He signed his Attestation Paper with the 70th Battery, Canadian Field Artillery on May 21, 1917 in Toronto, Ontario, at the age of 22, naming his next-of-kin as his mother, Mary Hannan, stating that he had previous military service with a Naval Force, that he was Single and that his trade was that of Pressman.
