A 1882 French Bordeaux Philomatic Society Table Medal Award

A 1882 French Bordeaux Philomatic Society Table Medal - Copper, cornucopia hallmarked and marked "CUIVRE" (copper) on the edge, obverse illustrating the coat-of-arms of the City of Bordeaux, flanked by a vine of grapes on the left and conjoined branches of oak and laurel leaves on the right, a left-facing lion with its head turned and facing front-on below, surrounded by the inscription "SOCIETE PHILOMATHIQUE DE BORDEAUX" (Bordeaux Philomatic Society), inscribed "FONDEE EN 1808" (Founded in 1808) below the lion and engraver marked "MASSONNET", reverse illustrating a central circle inscribed "DECERNEE A" (Awarded To) and "1882" with a space in between for a recipient's name, the circle surrounded by an open-ended wreath of oak leaves on the left and laurel leaves on the right, surrounded by the inscription "XIIe EXPOSITION GENERALE" (12th General Exposition), 67 mm, contact marks, better than very fine.   Footnote: A Philomatic Society is an association of persons who love sciences. The term "philomatic" (in French, philomathique) is no longer in use. The philomatic societies were influential in the nineteenth century.
