A First War Medal Pair to the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion

British War Medal (739678 PTE. T.A. HAMMILL. 1-CAN.INF.); and Victory Medal (739678 PTE. T.A. HAMMILL. 1-CAN.INF.). Naming is officially impressed. Un-mounted, original ribbons, gilt wear and spotting evident on the VM, light contact, very fine. Footnote: Thomas Almas Hammill was born on April 18, 1885 in Hamilton, Ontario. He was a resident of Hagersville, Ontario when he signed his Attestation Paper as a Private (739678) with the 114th Infantry Battalion "Brock's Rangers", on February 14, 1916 in Hagersville, at the age of 30, naming his next-of-kin as his father, Samuel Hammill of Hamilton, which was later changed to his wife, Hattie Hammill of Hagersville, stating that he had no previous military service, that he was Married and that his trade was that of Dry Goods Store Manager. The Battalion was raised in Haldimand County and the Six Nations Reserve, with mobilization headquarters at Cayuga under the authority of G.O. 151, December 22, 1915. The Battalion sailed November 1, 1916 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel A.T. Thompson with a strength of 31 officers and 679 other ranks. In England, the Battalion was broken up and absorbed into the 35th and 36th Infantry Battalions, with Hammill later being transferred to the 1st Infantry Battalion. He survived the war.
