A British War Medal to the Canadian Engineers

(838365 SPR. W. NORTON. C.E.). Naming is officially impressed. Light contact, near extremely fine. Footnote: William Norton was born on February 1, 1878 in Liverpool, England. He was a resident of Owen Sound, Ontario when he signed his Attestation Paper as a Private (838365) with the 147th Infantry Battalion "Grey Battalion", on November 30, 1915 at Owen Sound, at the age of 37, naming his next-of-kin as his wife, Annie Norton of Owen Sound, stating that he had no previous military service, that he was Married and that his trade was that of Groom. The Battalion was raised in Grey County, Ontario with mobilization headquarters at Owen Sound under the authority of G.O. 151, December 22, 1915. The Battalion sailed November 14, 1916 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel G.F. McFarlane with a strength of 32 officers and 910 other ranks. In England, the Battalion was absorbed into the 8th Reserve Battalion, with Norton later transferred to the Canadian Engineers as a Sapper. He survived the war.
