Black and white photograph, faded slightly to a sepia-toned look, taken in a studio setting, illustrating Akicita Hanska, "Long Soldier", Hunkpapa Chief of the Standing Rock Agency in traditional dress, with braided long hair, wearing a feathered beaver top hat with an angled letter "G" affixed to the front, a banner resting across his lap and secured by his right hand, a pipe in his left hand, the photograph measuring 100 mm x 146 mm and mounted to a 107 mm x 165 mm stiff cardboard backer, studio marked "Paul," at the lower left, dated "1889." in the lower centre and location marked "SPRINGFIELD, MO." at the lower right, with an ornate rule between the type and the photograph, both in brown ink, slight vertical curl in the cardboard, light surface wear on the obverse, scattered soiling on the reverse, crack at the lower left with tape repair evident, better than very fine.
Footnote: Akicita Hanska, "Long Soldier", Hunkpapa Chief of the Standing Rock Agency signed the Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1868. The beaver top hat that he is wearing was in vogue during the Civil War period.
