A Memorial Cross & MID Group to Private Broad; North Nova Scotia Highlanders 1944

1939-1945 Star; France and Germany Star; Defence Medal; Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Overseas Clasp; War Medal 1939-1945 with MID Oak Leaf; and Memorial Cross, George VI (G.19189 PTE. C.K.BROAD). The five Second War medals are un-named, mounted to a suspension with swing bar pinback, original ribbons, the MID oak leaf unattached versus the War Medal, dark patinas on the silver medals, the Cross is officially engraved, the "C" in his service number mistakenly engraved as a "G" (although one Government site recognizes it as a "G"), in its hardshelled case of issue, gilt King's crown on the lid. Extremely fine. Accompanied by his North Nova Scotia Highlanders Glengarry Cap, with a finely textured, black wool upper, bordered by a red and white checkered pattern in the wool which encompasses it, with a 10 mm wide black nylon border along the open end, a 57.5 mm white metal North Nova Scotia Highlanders Glengarry Badge surmounting a black rosette, the badge held in place via intact lugs and pin, topped by a red toorie, dual black ribbons at the rear, inside is lined in black cotton, the cap measuring 95 mm x 280 mm.

Footnote: C/19189 Private Charles Kenneth Broad, North Nova Scotia Highlanders, Royal Canadian Infantry Corps (RCIC) was Mentioned in Despatches on March 31, 1945. He was Killed in Action on September 17, 1944 during Operation Wellhit (AKA the Battle of Boulogne), one of twenty men from the regiment lost that day. Operation Wellhit was an operation by the 3rd Canadian Division (Canadian 1st Army) to take the fortified port of Boulogne in Northern France. Broad is buried in Calais Canadian War Cemetery (Leubringham), Pas de Calais, France, Grave Reference: 2. C. 6. and is commemorated on page 258 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance. On January 19, 1956, a decision was made to commemorate Private Broad by having a lake in the Northwest Territories named after him. Broad Lake is located at 61 degrees 37'00" latitude and 104 degrees 15'00" longitude, with the Unique Identification of LADSI.
